So I acquired this quarter the other night. (Big deal, I work in a casino, I get a LOT of quarters!) But this one happens to be a quarter from 1943.
Actually I didn't even notice it at first, and I wouldn't have except for the sound. I have to keep track of what I make in tips every night (hooray for the IRS!) and some days (like last thursday night) I don't bother to change it all in for large bills at the end of the night. So I'm dropping quarters in groups of four into my change jar, counting out the dollars I made "19 (clink), 20 (clink), 21 (clink), 22 (cl-chinnnnnng)" whaaa? howcum none of my other quarters cl-chinnnnng'ed? I look and see this one that's worn down, but worn in a different way than most worn quarters I've seen, not sure if I can explain it, maybe...flatter. And it's kind of whitish. And the date is 1943.

So I know pennies during WWII were made out of steel, and I remember hearing quarters were made out of something different? Pure silver (no copper middle) perhaps? I think that might be it. Kind of FELT like it could be aluminum, but too heavy.

And here's the absolute BEST part (amusing to me anyway.) is that I'm sure I got this quarter just because some compulsive gambler was sitting there feeding their "lucky slot machine" and it kept spitting this quarter back at them (because of the different weight and all) so they run up to the bar to get their free coffee with six creams and 29 sugars which they demand to get RIGHT NOW despite a bar full of people that I need to serve first just because they're afraid to leave that slot machine more than they'd be afraid to leave their children in a cage with ten hungry alligators. And they've probably never tipped for the thousands of free coffees they've drank here because we should all just be glad that we had the chance to wait on them, BUT TONIGHT...."Well, the slot machine won't take my quarter so it must be worthless anyway. I guess I could tip the bartender with it since I'm not going to use it."

So now I have a spiffy quarter! I've never been an active coin collector or anything, but I've always had some interest in it. Not all the state quarters because that's too predictable and everyone is capatalizing off it ALREADY, never mind when all 50 states have been printed. I'm trying to get 50 years of pennies (1950-2000) just through what I pick up in change, not having to buy anything at a coin show or something like that. And I keep any wheatback penny I get. Kind of fun, I don't know. Yaaaay cool quarter! :)
